Anatomy of a Man
Lizzo’s 2017 pop single “Truth Hurts” prompts an awareness and open questioning of masculine ideals found within in our Western contemporary setting. In this context, masculinity and the male form are explicitly highlighted throughout her lyrics, “Why are men great, ‘til they gotta be great?” Subtle notions of the disposability of the male form can be observed within many cultural ideals, from the disposability of men within military contexts, cultural trends, dating, body standards, and emotional vulnerability. Patriarchy and male privilege within current and past societies remains a real critique, but the packaged issues that innately affect the male form are often overshadowed and overlooked.
